Box Tree Barn

BOX TREE BARN, LOCKTON, NORTH YORK MOORS NATIONAL PARK

Two ranges of redundant and seriously derelict Grade 2 Listed agricultural buildings comprising of stables, sheds, a hayloft, a granary, a dairy, outbuildings and a ‘horse engine room’. Dating from circa 1750 and set in a Doomsday village, these stone and pan-tile structures had languished without maintenance or use for many years.

The development project lasted over a year, and was approached with a method typical of ‘Listed’ status in a National Park Conservation Area and an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty: Lime putty mortar internally and externally throughout, no new apertures on the external envelope, sensitive building methods.

High point of development: Watching the English oak support beam sourced from Castle Howard Estate being craned into the former Wheel-house to form a structural centre-piece.
