Old Barn, Sessay

Comprising of stables and a barn this beautiful building, designed in 1870 by the eminent Victorian architect W. Butterfield, was barely standing when we took on the development. Trees were well established within its walls, and the roofs had caved in; most sections were either extremely damaged or had half fallen down.

The fallen-down sections were built up again or rebuilt entirely using new hand-made bricks which were made to order: exact replicas in shape, size and colour pigments of what bricks remained. The walls were soaking wet from years and years of rain ingress. The project took us approximately eight months to complete, and included a modern glass faceted extension with a vaulted ceiling.

High point: Watching the joiner attach the new roof structure, hence crowning the new dwelling, claiming it back from the elements.
