Spring Cottage

SPRING COTTAGE, LASTINGHAM, NORTH YORK MOORS NATIONAL PARK:

Originally a pair of cottages built in the mid- 1700s, this Georgian property served in part as the village shop (see photo), before it was returned to full residential status as one single detached home in the late 1980s, offering ample proportions including four large bedrooms and two large bathrooms. A scheme of renovation fused the property into one house; converted the old garage/stable into a self-contained annexe with a kitchen and bathroom; extended the property to the rear to create a glass-fronted recreation room/study; and refurbished the interiors to 21st century standard.

High point of the project: Witnessing the old brick garage and sheds morph into a beautiful little cottage, which complements the main house perfectly.

Low point: Fighting the neighbours’ objections when we sought planning permission for the cottage- a common theme!
